In April 1907 Alliot Verdon Roe won the £75 prize offered by the Daily Mail for model aroplanes weighing between 2 and 50lb (1 - 23 Kg) and capable of mechanical flight to above 50ft (15m). Alliot entered 3 models. Only one other person, Mr W.F.Howard, entered models capable of flying. Alliot's design was based on his own experiments and reflected his thinking on the deisgn of full size craft.
